Roulette can seem like a complicated game when you first lay eyes on it because there are many bets and in real casinos, there’s often a scramble with people placing different bets all over the place in a short space of time. In my opinion, it’s a very easy game to understand and what I’m going to do here is give you a guide on how to play.
To start with the aim of the game is to guess where the ball will land and there are many bets on the table that you can use to accomodate your guess such as a bet on the number you think or hope will land, all the way up to betting on a particular color which will bet on 18 different numbers.
Every player on a roulette table has their own color of chips so the first thing you need to do is find a table that has a spare seat. Once you are sat down, you need to hand the dealer some cash in exchange for chips and then you can start playing.
You can only place bets when the dealer gives you permission which is why there’s often a mad frenzy of people placing bets all over the table, here’s how it works. The dealer will start by saying you can place your bets which is the beginning of the process. You get around 30 seconds to place bets and then the ball is released, but you can continue placing your bets even after the release of the ball.
After the ball has completed a few revolutions of the wheel, the dealer will announce that no more bets can be placed which is when it’s time to wait and see where the ball land and find out whether or not you have won. Once the ball lands, the dealer will mark the winning bets and remove the losing chips from the table and the winners are paid. You can then place your bets for the next spin of the wheel and that, in a nutshell, is how you play roulette, it really is that simple.
While that is the basics of the game covered, there are other things to learn such as the numerous different bets, how many numbers they cover, the payout structure and the odds. I have an entire page dedicated to that and once you’ve learned them, you will be ready to try your luck on the wheel.
What about playing online?
If you want to play online roulette rather than going into a real casino, it’s even easier. Naturally, all the bets and payouts are still the same when you play online but the gameplay is much faster and all you need to do is click a few buttons. Just pick a casino, select a roulette game and click on the part of the table where you want to bet and then click the spin button. There are a lot of casinos to choose from but I would recommend Ladbrokes who have a lot of games to choose from and you can place sports bets as well.
I have a page on where to play online roulette which talks about my favourite casinos, why they are my favourites and why I play there. When playing online you also get a choice of different games which isn’t normally the case in real casino because they normally only offer one version of the game depending on where they are – American roulette is America, European roulette in Europe and so on. Internet based roulette games also have their own unique versions such as mini and live roulette.
