What a lot of people don’t realise about roulette is that there are several different versions of the game and with that comes different odds, rules and bets so what I’m going to do here is describe the main variations of the game.
European Roulette – When it comes to playing roulette online, this is the main version of roulette that will be presented to you by most online casinos. There are 37 different numbers, one of which is the green slot that creates the house edge which in total stands at 2.7%.
French Roulette – If you can find a casino online or offline that offers the French variation then it’s the game you should play, especially if you plan on betting on any of the even pay out bets. It has the same amount of numbers as European roulette but the difference is that when you bet on an even chance bet and the ball lands on zero, you get half of your bet back which reduces the house edge to 1.35% for even chance bets.
American Roulette – The American variation of the game has an extra number – the 00 which is coloured green. The problem is that the pay outs have not been changed at all to accommodate the additional number and as a result, the house edge increases to 5.26%. If you are in a real casino, you will need to make do with whatever roulette game you’re given but if you’re playing online, you would be better off giving the American game a miss and playing French or European instead.
Mini Roulette – Mini roulette is a game that you will find online by software developers such as Playtech and Net Entertainment, and as the name says, it’s a mini version of the game with 13 numbers, 6 red and black and one green. While it’s an appealing looking game, the house edge is around 7.6% which is as high as it gets for casinos games. If you have to give it a go, stick to playing in moderation before going back to the games with better odds.
Live Roulette – There are a lot of conspiracy theorists on the Internet who question the fairness of online roulette games so to put the minds of these people at rest, they introduced live roulette which is a real dealer, wheel, table and ball that you can see and place bets on. It plays just like a real roulette game in any casino and I’ve written more about it here.
Despite the fact that you can see the wheel and ball via a crisp connection, some people still convince themselves that live games are rigged as well and that pre recorded clips are played so that the casino makes the maximum amount of money on each spin. Some people will never be satisfied and they would be better off just staying away from roulette altogether.
